Black Belt

Umbria TrenchAccording to Shelly's Law, a gal can never own too many bras, or too many trench coats. Commence your trench collection with the classic tan variety, cop another in black if you live in a dirty city, one noticeably vintage style and sleek aged leather if you can find it. After you've stocked up on the basics, venture into lady land for a proper gray cotton trench from Umbria. Lovey! ($158)

Clearly Beloved

Surprisingly, the local cobbler stocks  a variety of products; usual items like suede cleaner and sometimes the unexpected clear golf umbrella. Even compact and on a rack, it had a sleek and futuristic quality, I purchased it on the spot. The threat of showers has only occurred twice this week, each time I was prepared with my invisibrella and the compliments rolled in. Maneuver through a sea of black umbrellas on a crowded New York City sidewalk with style and ease. ($30)

Sailor Moon

Japanese bookseller Kinokuniya is one of my favorite places to shop for paper goods; so I was surprised to find they now carry a small selection of clothing from Beth by Victorian Maiden. Never heard of it? Me neither, so I did a bit of research on Harajuku girls and contemporary Japanese fashion. This sailor collar coat is in the "Lolita" style, for the young lady with a disposable income and penchant for girly Victorian clothing. Sweeten the deal with red patent mary janes, patterned hosiery and white gloves . ($388)

Tenderfoot Tootsie

Missoni Sport Panakea Wrap SweaterSince you can't wrap yourself in a log cabin, try a belted woolen wrap sweater
instead. Stand out among the winter blacks and grays with the soft colors of the desert plains. Distinctive striping patterns harken back to the handloomed wool blankets of the Southwest Native Americans. A timeless piece from Missoni Sport, the simplistic design and flattering cut complement most body types. Leather Forecast

Washed leather blazerMother Nature let the temperature in New York City drop to 55 degrees last night! That's pretty nippy for a Florida girl — like it or not, Fall is here. Pack away those flimsy summer wraps, they won't keep out the chill air like this stylish washed leather blazer will. With great details like cropped sleeves and one button closure, this is probably a jacket you can only wear 3 months out of the year... like that ever stopped you. (£90/$125)

This Is Why I'm Haute

woolen polka dot short coatI've gone ga-ga for this brilliant woolen polka dot short coat from Sonia by Sonia Rykiel. A modern take on Victorian tailoring; darts, pleats, and folds dominate throughout. Fitted and pleated sleeves, puffy shoulders, nipped in waist and subsequent flare are also dead giveaways. The grand doyenne adds off beat touches like assymetrical button fastening and pintucks througout to sweeten the deal. ($730)
